The owners have fully restored the property in 2020 and it incorporates its own unique character with well-designed use of space.
This historic property was previously owned by two of the most prominent figures in Hexham history, Charles Head, a solicitor and Henry Bell, a tanner - the largest employer at the height of Hexham’s tanning fame. Hexham was famous for its fine leather gloves known as Hexham Tans. His son, another Henry Bell, who was born in the main house, gave the town its bandstand in the Sele Park and both Charles Head and Henry Bell have stained glass windows and plaques dedicated to them in Hexham Abbey.
Entry to The Coach House is through a stone archway, itself a scheduled ancient monument with a short driveway leading down to the entrance. On the ground floor there is a galley area, in which has been built an asymmetric bespoke cabin style bunk bed for adults or children, and is equipped with USB sockets for phone charging and pull out storage space. Three steps down lead you to the beautiful open plan living area, with windows the full height of the building, amazing beams and eclectic style lights. Flagstone sized, limestone coloured porcelain flooring and underfloor heating provide an opulent feel to this grand space. Two leather sofas hug the central wood burner, and the dining area has an industrial style table and benches in in a raised recess, adding another interesting dimension to the room. There is a bathroom with shower over P-shaped bath, and a well-equipped shaker style kitchen where you will find a welcome pack of local produce. Stairs lead up to the mezzanine floor, with a beautiful galleried reading area at one end overlooking the living space, and at the other, there is a double bedroom. Outside a small courtyard sits at the rear of the property, a lovely spot to sit and enjoy a morning coffee.
Hexham is filled with interesting places to visit including Hexham Abbey, which sits proudly in the market place of the town. Dating back to AD674, this old priory boasts an interactive exhibition and a visitor centre, as well as fabulous grounds and public spaces. Within a short walk there are a variety of restaurants and eateries, a theatre, cinema, golf course, leisure centre with pool and ten-pin bowling alley. For guests who enjoy a day at the races, Hexham Racecourse is within a short drive away and has a packed calendar all year round. Within 6 miles is the world famous Hadrian’s Wall, the county’s greatest Roman monument and World Heritage Site, which stretches 73 miles across the backbone of Northumberland. Crossing through stunning countryside, natural woodland and meadows, there are plenty of established public footpaths, cycle paths and bridleways to explore, as well as Roman forts and settlements that include Vindolanda, Chesters and Housesteads. The pretty town of Corbridge, 5 miles, offers walks along the riverbanks, boutique shops and great places to eat and drink. The Northumberland National Park and International Dark Skies Park are both close by and offer some of the most fabulous scenery and views, as well as unbeatable stargazing at night. Hexham is very well-positioned for exploring the bordering counties of Cumbria and County Durham, with Carlisle, the Lake District and the cathedral city of Durham all within an hour’s drive. Just 20 miles west of Newcastle, guests will find there are plenty of shopping opportunities, art galleries, museums, restaurants and bars. Shop ¼ mile, pub and restaurant ½ mile.
