Ο Δίας, αδύναμος να ικανοποιήσει μια τέτοια επιθυμία αλλά και λυπούμενος την ερωτευμένη Σελήνη, εξασφάλισε την αιώνια νεότητα του Ενδυμίωνα κάνοντάς τον να κοιμάται παντοτινά. Ο Δίας όμως του έδωσε το προνόμιο να μένει αγέραστος και αθάνατος, μόνον όσο κοιμάται.
Με αυτό τον τρόπο, ο Ενδυμίωνας θα ζούσε μέσα στον ύπνο του για πάντα και η ερωτευμένη Σελήνη θα μπορούσε να ζεί τον έρωτά της κάθε νύχτα, μέχρι το χάραμα.
