Quiet in winter, Cardedu comes to life in the summer, during the festival “Insieme a Cardedu”, with a vast array of interesting events, from music and dancing to theater and folklore, for the joy of both residents and tourists. Sailing along the wonderful coast it possible to admire some of the most beautiful bays of the Mediterranean: Cala Gonone, Cala Luna, Cala Goloritzè are nowadays very well-know destinations for tourism.
As a matter of fact the whole Orosei gulf has been appointed by the EU as SIC (Site of Communitarian Importance), awards given to sites characterized by the presence of important species of flora and fauna. One of the most famous and popular site is the Grotta del Bue Marino (Sea cow's cave), once shelter for the seals, today in danger of extinction.
The species of animals are numerous and include vultures, predatory birds, moufflons and wild boars, mostly in the internal area.
On the Ogliastra coast, in a natural park with a wealth of plateaux and plains, artificial lakes and torrents, forests and bush, beaches, buttes and outcrops lies Cardedu. Founded immediately after a landside partly destroyed Gairo in 1951, the village, which for some time was kept under Gairo’s jurisdiction, became a municipality of his own in 1984.
A sandy seabed with limpid waters and a coast where dazzling coves suddenly appear to break the long white stretches of sand and reefs, pebbles and red porphyry sketch a gorgeous landscape, variegated, rugged and uncontaminated.
Cardedu is also a favourite seaside resort for windsurfers because of the strong sirocco winds. The East Coast of Sardinia: the canoeist’s ideal habitat, according to not just Cardedu Kayak but anyone who’s been lucky enough to visit and paddle here. Places visited all year round by those who love nature and its marvels, rather than creature comforts.
The coastline lends itself to all open-air sporting and “wellness” activities. Among these, sea canoeing is the most sought-after.
The canoeist’s privileged position and the absolute silence, interrupted only by the noise of the paddle strokes, help you to admire what the coastline offers.
Rare landscapes, unpolluted marine environments, one marvel after another immersed in the crystalline waters whose colours range from emerald green to cobalt blue, with alongside the deep green of the Mediterranean shrubs (“macchia”) that grow right up to the water’s edge.
Beaches and bays in all their beauty alternate with little caves, impressive rocks and granite shapes eroded over time by wind and sea. You paddle kilometers after kilometers, forgetting the time that passes, accompanied by a continuous show of colours and smells and, when you look up to the majestic high limestone cliffs falling vertically down to the sea, you can’t help noticing the calm and undisturbed flight of the griffon vulture. At Cardedu Kayak we’re certain that all this will delight the expert and not-so-expert canoeist.
There is a place somewhere in the Mediterranean sea where you will find both tradition and nature, rocks and the sea, where you will be able to walk along old goat lanes and enjoy the local hospitality in old sheep-folds: this place is Supramonte in Baunei.
The company 'Salinas Escursioni' is ruled by shepherds who know the place very well and who will guide you through the mountain, this place which has remained wild and fascinating. If you look for a genuine place, this wild exotic paradise is for you.
We will walk along antique narrow mule paths, and up juniper tree ladders, to cross wild breathtaking landscapes, up needles and through arches dug into the chalk and impressive cliffs. This is what our Supramonte is about. Our expert guides will take you for a trip which may vary from 5 to 7 days in the different creeks of the Orosei gulf, staying overnight in sheep-folds or even sleeping on the shore.
You will meet Royal eagles and moufflons; you will see impressive twisted holm-oaks and juniper trees. You will also see strawberry trees and turpentine trees which add coloured figures to the chalk. You will also be able to visit natural excavations, drink from precious springs and admire the ruins of the Nuragic culture. You will get a real overdose of nature which you will never forget, with the perfumes and colors of Selvaggio Blu, unforgettable for those who experienced them.
Those are some of the trips which we suggest, but we can also organize many other treks according to your wishes. Send us an e-mail with your demands and wishes and we will find an itinerary which will satisfy you.
Selvaggio Blu
This is the name of un unforgettable trek, you will walk through creeks, to cliffs, caves, rivers and in the Mediterranean bush. It is a six days' fascinating adventure, full of emotions, in the mountain in century-old oak woods, through huge calcarean arches, steep rock bluffs, in old sheep-folds within breathtaking panoramas, all along antique paths where goat-herds and charcoal burners used to stride. Spring and Autumn months are the best ones for this magnificent trek on Baunei territory.
It is a several stage hike which can last several days with Paolo and Salvatore who will lead you along unique creeks scattered on the Baunei shore. You will sleep in sheep-folds or on the beach.
You will cross unknown lanes, antique mule paths and use clever juniper tree ladders; you will yield to the charm of wonderful panoramas, full of calcarean arches, needles and bluffs on a sea whose beauty is unequalled. The length of the trip can be adapted and personalized according to the hikers' wishes.
We guarantee the transfers to and from Sardinian harbors and airports.
BAUNEI: a corner of unspoiled paradise in Sardinia
The Baunei territory offers a wonderful harmony between the mountain and the sea; its coast line is 25 miles long with bastions, calcareous cliffs that sheer drop into the sea, and which are carved with small creeks. The shore spreads from Santa Maria Navarrese to Cala Luna. The most famous sights from the south are Pedra Longa needle, Montesanto cape, Porto Pedrosu, Cala Goloritzé, Ispuligidenie (also know as Cala Mariolu), Cala Biriàla, Cala Sisine and Cala Luna. The territory is constituted of karstic vales of the basaltic Golgo plateau with the 'Su Sterru' pit (the deepest in Europe) and the karstic plateau Margine. The Royal eagle, the Queen hawk, the Corsican sea-gull, the Bonelli eagle live here. There are a great number of very interesting caves and pits all along the coast, below and above sea level.
The historical patrimony is not to be forgotten, there are numerous traces of the different historic periods. Anthropozoic silts from the prenuralghic period were found as well as nuraghes, nuragic villages, forts and tombs of the nuragic giants period. Sights and coins from the imperial and republican periods and also from Roman times were also discovered. You will also have to visit the Santa Maria Navarrese and Eltili medieval churches, the Spanish tower and the Golgo church. Besides, for rock climbers, numerous walls have been equipped, for a variety of levels, offering unique and exceptional views between needles and cliffs steep above the sea.
Santa Maria Navarrese hamlet is at the foot of a hill covered with olive trees, fig trees, locust trees and lotus trees and a thick bush. This coastal village is named after a small church erected in 1052 by the Navarre Princess, daughter of the king Garcia Sanchez V. She has likely fled her country because of a love sin and she is said to have wanted to thank the Madona for saving her life after a shipwreck near the frightening 'Monti Insani' now called Monte Santo.
The coile Piras
The Piras family's sheep-fold (in Sardinian 'su coile', a Baunei dialect term) is devoted to goat breeding. It is located in an interesting site: you can see how the Baunei Supramonte slides into the sea. These sheep-folds 'coile de cabras' are interesting to visit: Goat-herds used to live there during several solitary months or with their families at some periods. The goat cheese is made there after each milking.
The different parts of the sheep-fold are:
- 'su baraccu' the goat-herd's hut
- 'sa corte' the goat pen
- 'as cumbulas' the pig pen.
The goat-herd's hut is composed of two main parts, a cylindrical base built on a dry wall of chalky stones and a conical roof made of juniper tree logs.
The juniper tree 'su s'inniperu' in the local dialect, is a very hard scented wood hardly attacked by insects. That is why it is preferred to holm-oak wood.
You will find several well-preserved goat pens and they are considered as jewels of local Supramonte architecture. They are also made of juniper tree wood, they are large and almost circular. You will also see how the goat-herd makes cheese and you will sit next to him to taste the local dishes.
