6 Bedroom House in Low Brunton, Hexham

Blending chic designer interiors and family comforts, Honeystone House sets a new benchmark for modern country house entertaining.
Hewn from local honey-coloured stone, punctured by towering 12-pane sash windows and curvaceous bow windows, Honeystone House is every architecture buff’s dream. And, the second you step into the soaring, fire-warmed entrance hall to note the way its two giant columns, wooden floors and walls are painted in an oh-so-soft grey to subtly deemphasise their scale while washing the entire space with light, you know you’re in interior design heaven too.
Honeystone House is a quintessentially English house, with gracious lines, intricate plasterwork and large sash windows framed by wooden shutters, yet its owners have banished any chintz or fuss, creating a chic, distinctly contemporary home that’s rich in designer details. From eye-popping Thibaut wallpaper paired with rich William Yeoward fabrics in the six bedrooms to vintage cantilever armchairs and a midnight blue velvet sofa in the sitting room, this is a house in which to expect the unexpected.
Despite its generous size, the house benefits from a natural flow between its rooms, complemented by the creation of countless intimate spots in which to enjoy a quiet tête-à-tête, contemplate the garden views or curl up with a book. The sitting room, bathed in light thanks to its tremendous south-west facing bay windows, feeds into an inviting garden room; the dining room features a sofa and armchairs for guests to ‘sit soft’ while lingering after convivial meals; and the light-filled country kitchen also serves as an informal dining space, with a rustic wooden table comfortably seating eight.
Honeystone House claims a secluded setting in 9.5 acres of landscaped gardens and woodland in the lush North Tyne valley. Avid historians will delight in the fact that the property is just a short stroll from Brunton Turret, the remains of a turret and altar that formed a key part of Hadrian’s Wall; the 7th-century St Oswald’s Church; and the battle ground of Heavenfield, which marks the end point of the scenic St Oswald’s Way hiking trail. The historic town of Hexham, with its splendid abbey, vibrant art scene, weekly market and diverse restaurants, is just four miles away while country pursuits abound, with salmon and trout fishing in the nearby North Tyne and Tyne rivers and local grouse and pheasant shoots.
However, for all the temptations on Honeystone House's doorstep, chances are you won’t want to stray too far while you have the opportunity to call it home. The dream pad in which to gather extended family or close friends together for a long overdue reunion or special occasion, it magically blends grandeur with intimacy, boutique hotel style with country house comfort and quintessential Britishness with modern American design.

The River Tyne is one of the best river systems for salmon and sea trout fishing in England and Wales, and rivals many of the Scottish rivers too. The River North Tyne, just 1.5 miles from Honeystone House, is one of the two sources feeding into it and sits downstream from Kielder dam, flowing through beautiful countryside along its course. For a day’s fishing on the river, you can purchase permits for one of the many beats along the river, from the online shop of the Tyne Rivers Trust. All proceeds of buying these permits go straight back to the Trust and will be used to further improve the river in years to come.
From mid-March to mid-April:
The well-known beat at The Chesters (1.6 miles from the property) is a 1.2km beat situated below Chollerford Weir and extending to Walwick Grange. The permit will allow fly fishing from both banks of Upper Island and Hodley Banks, with fast streams and holding pools with good stocks of wild brown trout for catch and release.
From mid-March to mid-June:
The Hersleyside Ridings Beat (12.5 miles from the property) spans 1.5km of vegetated gravel shore, which allows for fly fishing of brown trout (catch and release).
From mid-March to end-September:
Slightly further afield, the beat at Lewisburn (30 miles from the property) is a 4km stretch of water full of wild brown trout, spanning from High Long House to Lewisburn Car Park and has no limit on the number of anglers. Fly or worm fishing is permitted from March until July, then it is fly only during August and September (catch and release).
From February to October:
If you fancy fishing in the River Tyne itself, the Swallowship beat at The Devils Water (9 miles from the property), which is one of the main tributaries of the River Tyne, offers the opportunity to fly fish for brown trout, sea trout and if you’re lucky, salmon too (catch and release). It's a 1.6km beat running from Linnels Bridge, through Haughland and Canyon, ending as the river emerges into farmland above Dilston. Offering mixed grades of fishing with wide-open pools and steep-sided rock cliffs for more experienced anglers.
