Positive: Yokikan was a genuine find for us. Although it’s best accessed by rental car, the remoteness added to the specialness of the hotel. We booked a twin room with whirlpool bath, located on floor two of three in the low rise building. The plan came with two meals a day, and breakfast and dinner were truly extraordinary. Expect a lavish kaiseki menu for dinner, featuring specialties of Yamaguchi. We had a private dining room with sea view for both meals, with lots of seafood, including fugu, or blowfish, for which Yamaguchi is known. The menus were different for each of the three night stay. The staff was extremely gracious and helpful, greeting us from the time of arrival, and on departure. The hotel offers a drink counter free of charge during mornings and afternoons, with complimentary alcohol offered for happy hour in the lounge overlooking the sea. For the price we paid, this hotel was an extraordinary value. Just be mindful that you are in rural Japan, and staff will communicate mostly in Japanese. If you’re willing to make the trip to rural Yamaguchi, you cannot go wrong with a stay at Yokikan Hotel.

Negative: The facilities are aged, but very functional and perfectly comfortable. The onsen has both indoor and outdoor baths and tended toward the smaller side for an onsen stay.

Summary: Wonderful seaside property with great service and extraordinary meals.
